It is incredibly tempting to loop heavy grocery bags or a heavy purse over the push handles on the back of a manual wheelchair. This is highly dangerous. Wheelchairs are balanced based on the weight of the person sitting in the seat. When you add significant weight to the very back of the chair, you alter the center of gravity. The moment the user tries to go up a slight incline, a ramp, or a curb, the chair can instantly flip backward, resulting in severe head trauma.

To carry items safely, the weight must be distributed low and toward the center of the chair.
- Under-Seat Nets: Many chairs can be fitted with a mesh net that attaches underneath the seat. This is the safest place to store heavy items like water bottles or groceries because it keeps the center of gravity low.
- Saddlebags: These are pouches that drape over the armrests or attach to the side of the chair. They are perfect for phones, wallets, and keys, keeping them easily accessible without throwing off the chair's balance.
- Specialized Wheelchair Backpacks: If you must use the back of the chair, buy a bag specifically designed for wheelchairs. These sit flush against the backrest rather than dangling from the handles, keeping the weight closer to the user’s core.
Anti-Tip Bars
If your loved one carries items frequently or navigates steep ramps, ensure their wheelchair is equipped with anti-tip bars. These small wheels extend from the bottom rear of the frame and physically prevent the chair from flipping backward.
