Tire Care
If the wheelchair has pneumatic (air-filled) tires, they must be checked weekly. Under-inflated tires make the chair incredibly difficult to push and drain the battery of power chairs rapidly. Keep a bicycle pump handy and inflate them to the PSI listed on the side of the tire. If the chair has solid urethane tires, inspect them monthly for deep cracks or flat spots that indicate they need replacing.
Cleaning the Casters
The small front wheels (casters) are notorious for picking up hair, string, and carpet fibers. Over time, this debris wraps tightly around the axle, causing the wheels to stick, squeak, or pull to one side. Once a month, use a pair of tweezers or a small pair of scissors to carefully cut away any tangled hair and debris from the caster axles.
Testing the Brakes (Wheel Locks)
Wheel locks are the most critical safety feature during transfers. Over time, the mechanism can loosen. Engage the brakes and try to push the chair. If the wheels move even slightly, the brakes need adjusting. Usually, this just requires loosening a bolt, sliding the brake assembly closer to the tire, and tightening it back down.
General Cleaning
Wipe down the frame of the chair weekly with a damp cloth to remove dirt and prevent rust, especially during winter months when salt is on the sidewalks. Wash the seat cushion cover according to the manufacturer's instructions to maintain hygiene. A clean, well-maintained chair ensures a safe, smooth ride every time.
