The choice between reading on a screen or on paper isn't just a preference — for aging eyes specifically, the two formats create genuinely different amounts of visual strain, and the better choice depends on more than habit.

Adjustability is digital's biggest advantage

An e-reader or tablet lets font size, brightness, and contrast be changed instantly to match exactly what a specific pair of eyes needs in that moment — something no printed page can offer once it's printed.

Backlit screens can work against comfort at night

Standard tablet and phone screens emit blue-heavy light that can increase eye strain and interfere with sleep if used for extended reading in the evening. E-ink displays (like dedicated e-readers) avoid this largely, behaving more like reflective paper than a backlit screen.

Print has a fixed-size problem

A printed book's font size is permanent. For eyes that need larger text than the original print size offers, this is a real barrier — one that a magnifier can partially address but not eliminate the way digital resizing can.

Glare affects each format differently
