Prevent muscle stiffness and injury by incorporating a daily 10-minute stretching routine. Focus on stretching the chest, lower back, and hamstrings, which become tight from frequent lifting and bending. Staying hydrated and practicing deep breathing also keeps muscles oxygenated and ready for the physical demands of caregiving.
Caregiving is an endurance sport. Just as an athlete would never run a marathon without stretching and conditioning, a caregiver should not face the daily physical demands of lifting and assisting without maintaining their own body. Muscle stiffness, fatigue, and repetitive stress injuries are incredibly common, but they can be mitigated with a proactive physical self-care routine.
The Daily 10-Minute Stretch
You don't need an hour at the gym to make a difference; 10 minutes of targeted stretching can save your back. Caregivers spend a lot of time hunched forward—leaning over beds, pushing wheelchairs, and assisting with meals. This tightens the chest and overstretches the upper back.
To counteract this, practice chest openers: stand in a doorway, place your forearms on the doorframe, and gently lean forward to stretch your chest. Next, focus on your lower back and hamstrings. Lie on your back and gently pull your knees to your chest to release lower back tension. Tight hamstrings pull on the pelvis, exacerbating back pain, so gentle seated toe-touches are also essential.
Hydration and Rest
Dehydrated muscles cramp easily and are more prone to tearing. Keep a large water bottle with you and sip continuously throughout the day. Furthermore, physical recovery happens during sleep. While getting a full night's sleep is notoriously difficult for caregivers, prioritize resting in a supportive position. Use a pillow between your knees if you sleep on your side to keep your spine aligned.
Listen to your body. If you feel a sharp pain, stop. Ignoring a minor strain today will lead to a major injury tomorrow, rendering you unable to provide the care your loved one needs.
